Walgreens is making some changes to their product lines that will help consumers with a number of important health concerns.
New Walgreens brand Celebrex is expected to be available on the shelves beginning next year, according to The Associated Press. The price is likely to increase, possibly to $50 a month for 20 percent off, and it will be available at Walgreens, Walgreens's parent company, in the US and everywhere throughout the world.
"The company is committed to providing consumers with a reliable, affordable alternative to prescription medicines and health care resources," Walgreens Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Billvertisements said in a company news release.
"Celebrex, which contains the active ingredient Celecoxib, is an effective and safe alternative to traditional NSAIDs. We are committed to offering our customers reliable and affordable Celebrex without the need for frequent, high-dose monitoring of kidney function. This product is clinically proven to reduce pain and help manage inflammation in multiple organ systems. We are delighted to launch Walgreens' new product line to provide our customers with a reliable Celebrex that can be used effectively for a number of medical conditions."
Celebrex is the brand's first nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) to be made available on the US market, which is why Celebrex has been around for more than a decade. Its most famous product is the prescription painkiller Celebrex, which went on sale in December.

There have been some other recent marketing issues with Celebrex. A 2007 Consumer Reports report suggested that some of the drug's competitors, such as Cialis and Levitra, might be on the "least recommended" list, because they are not effective at treating arthritis pain.
The Celebrex brand, by contrast, is not on the top 10 or any of the top 20 or even top 20 list of the most commonly used NSAIDs in the US. The company has said that it would not recommend Celebrex to consumers, but is confident that consumers would not have to take it to avoid the risk of possible health problems.

Doshi says that the side effect profile of Celebrex varies among patients, but “it’s important to note that there are some other medications that can be prescribed that can affect Celebrex. One such medication is the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug naproxen, which was originally developed by Aleve in the 1970s. It has been approved for use by the FDA and has been available for years. Naproxen is a prescription drug that can be used to treat pain and has been shown to be safe and effective. Other medications used to treat pain, like ibuprofen, are generally considered safe and effective.”

I’m not a proponent of using any kind of over-the-counter pain relief medications that are stronger than Celebrex. That doesn’t make sense. It makes no sense to me.”
Doshi and his team have found that, when taken together, the drug effectively relieves pain and reduces inflammation. But it also reduces fever and lowers blood pressure. So it’s worth considering the potential side effects of taking Celebrex if you have a chronic pain condition, as well.
“There are a lot of people who are at risk of side effects when they take Celebrex,” Doshi says. “I’ve had many people who have been taking it for years, who have had a stomach ulcer or stomach or intestinal blockage, and they have all had a little side effect or the stomach ulcer. But I think it’s important for people to consider these things, and they are more likely to have side effects.”
“If you have chronic pain, you probably have other side effects to the stomach or gastrointestinal tract,” Doshi says. “If you have a stomach ulcer, it’s important to be aware of the possible side effects. It’s important for our patients and our families to be aware of that.”
Doshi recommends that doctors follow the guidelines for using medications that are safe and effective to treat the pain and inflammation in adults with arthritis.

“Celebrex may not be the best option for people who are experiencing pain and inflammation,” Dr. Carter said. “It’s not safe for people with certain conditions or who are taking certain medications.”
Celebrex can cause side effects, including joint pain, muscle pain and stiffness, as well as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, the FDA said. In rare cases, patients may also experience skin rashes, a condition called Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a rare but serious skin reaction.
