NEW YORK-- (AP) -- Pfizer Inc. says it will soon begin offering generic versions of generic drugs it sells online, including generics that include the pain-relieving drug diclofenac, according to a filing on its Web site today. Generics that don't include diclofenac could be available, Pfizer said, adding that the company will begin selling the generic versions of the drugs in New York and New Jersey, New York, and in Florida.
"I think we are well-positioned to make sure they're not going into the market as a drug in the United States," said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of Public Citizen's health policy research group. "It's important for us to have a clear understanding of the generic and the drug we sell."
Generic versions of Celebrex, an antibiotic that treats arthritis and pain, have been available since 1999, the company said. The company said that generic versions of the drug are available in some stores, while the generics are not.
In December, the company also posted an online advisory to doctors about generic Celebrex, which it said was effective against a range of ailments including arthritis and pain. The company said it planned to launch generic versions of Celebrex in the second half of 2009. On the same date, it will begin selling generics of the drug in the U.
